IMD Issues Orange Alert as Rain and Thunderstorms Likely Across Odisha for Next Three Days

Several parts of Odisha are expected to witness rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning over the next three days starting Saturday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).


The forecast was issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar, which stated that most districts in the state may experience rainfall during this period.

Rain and Thunderstorms Likely in Northern Coastal Districts

Weather officials indicated that a few places in the northern coastal districts could receive rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Gusty winds may also occur in several regions during this weather system.

According to Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, many areas in north Odisha are likely to experience unstable weather conditions.

Districts expected to receive rain and thunderstorms on March 7 include:

  • Sundargarh

  • Jharsuguda

  • Keonjhar

  • Mayurbhanj

  • Balasore

  • Bhadrak

  • Kendrapara

  • Jagatsinghpur

  • Puri

  • Cuttack

  • Khordha

Orange Alert for Four Districts

The weather department has issued an orange warning for March 8 for four districts:

  • Sundargarh

  • Keonjhar

  • Mayurbhanj

  • Balasore

These districts may experience heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning, with wind speeds likely reaching 40–50 kmph.

Yellow Warning for Multiple Districts

A yellow warning has been issued for 12 districts on Saturday and 24 districts on Sunday, indicating the possibility of rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

In areas under the yellow alert, wind speeds may reach 30–40 kmph, which could lead to brief weather disruptions.

Humid Conditions Also Expected

The India Meteorological Department has also warned that humid weather conditions may prevail in several parts of the state during this period.

Additionally, a yellow warning from March 9 to March 10 has been issued for six districts:

  • Keonjhar

  • Mayurbhanj

  • Balasore

  • Bhadrak

  • Jagatsinghpur

  • Kendrapara

Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and lightning activity.
