The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a weather alert for several districts across Odisha, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds as active monsoon conditions continue to influence the state.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious throughout the day as unstable weather is expected to affect many regions.

Heavy Rain Likely in Seven Districts

According to the latest IMD forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph are likely at one or two places in:

  • Balasore
  • Bhadrak
  • Kendrapara
  • Jagatsinghpur
  • Kandhamal
  • Rayagada
  • Koraput

The weather department has also warned of heavy rainfall in isolated areas of these districts.

Yellow Warning Issued for 15 Districts

The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for the following districts:

  • Bargarh
  • Sambalpur
  • Sonepur
  • Balangir
  • Nuapada
  • Kalahandi
  • Nabarangpur
  • Malkangiri
  • Gajapati
  • Ganjam
  • Nayagarh
  • Khordha
  • Puri
  • Cuttack
  • Jajpur

These districts are likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning activity, and gusty winds with speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph.

Active Monsoon Driving Rainfall Across Odisha

Weather experts said the ongoing southwest monsoon remains active over Odisha, leading to widespread rainfall activity across multiple districts.

Several parts of the state have already witnessed intermittent rain over the past few days, and favourable atmospheric conditions are expected to sustain rainfall activity in the coming days.

The IMD has indicated that monsoon-related weather systems will continue to influence Odisha’s weather pattern, resulting in periodic showers and thunderstorms.

IMD Advises People to Take Precautions

In view of the forecast, the weather department has urged residents to take necessary safety measures during thunderstorms and lightning events.

People have been advised to:

  • Stay indoors during lightning activity.
  • Avoid open fields and exposed locations.
  • Refrain from taking shelter under trees.
  • Follow official weather updates regularly.
  • Exercise caution while travelling during heavy rain and strong winds.

Farmers, fishermen, construction workers, and others engaged in outdoor activities have been specifically advised to remain alert and plan their work according to weather advisories.

Weather Conditions to Remain Unsettled

The IMD said weather conditions are likely to remain favourable for rainfall across many parts of Odisha over the next few days. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have urged citizens to stay informed through official weather bulletins.

With monsoon activity intensifying, residents are encouraged to remain prepared for sudden weather changes and follow safety guidelines to avoid lightning-related incidents.
