IMD Issues Cold Wave Warning for 15 Odisha Districts

Fog Forecast for Next Five Days; Mercury Drops Below 10°C in 18 Cities

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued a yellow warning for 15 districts of Odisha as the state continues to reel under a severe cold wave.


In the past 24 hours, Rourkela recorded the lowest temperature at 4.6°C in the plains, while Udayagiri in the hilly region registered 2.6°C. The capital city, Bhubaneswar, reported a minimum of 10.5°C, and Cuttack recorded 10°C.

Jharsuguda experienced intense cold wave conditions, while Angul and Jagatsinghpur also reported cold wave-like situations. Across Odisha, dry weather persisted, but temperatures dipped below 10°C in 18 cities. Dense fog disrupted transport in several areas, with Boudh reporting visibility below 50 metres. Fog was also recorded in Bhawanipatna, Koraput, and Phulbani.

According to IMD, isolated cold wave conditions will continue in northern and coastal districts until January 17. Thereafter, temperatures are expected to rise by 2–4°C. However, light to moderate fog is forecast across Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Balasore, Kalahandi, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Kandhamal over the next five days.

Warnings have been issued for multiple districts, with morning and early hours expected to witness foggy conditions. Between January 19 and 21, fog will intensify and affect additional districts, including Khurda, Puri, and Nayagarh.
