Bhubaneswar: The Institute of Life Science (ILS), Bhubaneswar has added another feather to its cap by discovering an effective drug against cerebral malaria, which is most fatal in nature.
The institute has successfully conducted the trial on mice and clinical trial for the testing on human body will be made soon, officials said.
The achievement of the ILS scientists has been published in the popular British science journal- ‘Nature’.
Veteran Health scientist Dr Arun Nagraj-led team has developed the much awaited drug after several rounds of tests. The team had applied the drug on rats in the initial trial to find out its efficacy.
After the successful trial on rats, the team planned to conduct clinical trial of the drug in near future.
Once the trial gets success, it would be an important panacea for the cerebral malaria that claims hundreds of lives every year. It would help eradicate severe malaria as well.
A research on the mission had started in 2016. The team has roped in Biotechnology Industry Research Assistant Council (BIRC) to arrange funds for clinical trial.
Dr Nagraj said human trial will be conducted in and outside Odisha.
