A devastating explosion in an illegal firecracker godown in Deesa town, Banaskantha district, Gujarat, resulted in the tragic loss of at least 18 lives on Tuesday.
The victims, mostly from Madhya Pradesh, were buried under debris as the explosion caused the building to collapse. Officials have confirmed the casualties were a result of bodily injuries from the collapse rather than burn wounds.
Investigations revealed that the godown had been illegally functioning as a firecracker manufacturing unit. The district administration had earlier rejected the owner’s license renewal application, citing non-compliance with fire safety regulations. However, the owner proceeded to stock explosives and manufacture fireworks, leading to this unfortunate incident.
Authorities have arrested two individuals connected to the case, and efforts are underway to apprehend the owner. Police have pledged strict legal action to ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future. State Health Minister Rushikesh Patel emphasized the lack of basic facilities and vowed a thorough investigation into the matter.
