Police and locals intercepted a container truck illegally transporting cattle near Bhimabhoi Square in Redhakhol town of Sambalpur district on Saturday morning.
As a result, the operation rescued more than 35 cattle and led to the arrest of two smugglers.
Officials identified the arrested men as Salim Khan and Mohammad Salim. The truck was reportedly moving cattle from Begunia to Kharagpur. Meanwhile, Bajrang Dal activists received information and began tracking the vehicle. They then coordinated with local residents and police to stop the truck near Bhimabhoi Square.
Witnesses explained that the driver locked the steering and fled the scene. However, locals caught the helper and handed him over to the police. Later, when authorities opened the container to shift the rescued cattle to the Vaishnavjhuli cowshed, they discovered another smuggler hiding among the animals.
Police confirmed that the cattle were in poor condition and required immediate care. Consequently, the rescued animals were transported to the cowshed for shelter. Investigators further revealed that Afak Khan is the main accused behind the smuggling operation.
Local police emphasised that they arrested two smugglers and launched a detailed investigation into the illegal trade. Moreover, authorities assured that strict action will follow against those involved in the racket.
