Sambalpur: The authorities of Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur have decided to release the season’s first flood waters on June 23.
As the water level in the reservoir is rising due to the rains in the upper catchment area of the Mahanadi River in Chhattisgarh, the dam authorities have decided to release the excess water from the reservoir.
According to reports, the flood water will be discharged by opening the sluice gate on the left spillway of the reservoir at 9 am on the 23rd of June. All the people living downstream have been alerted in advance.
Due to the discharge of the season’s first flood waters, the water level in the Mahanadi River and its tributaries will rise.
The gate will be opened first from the left side spillway after the traditional puja in the morning on 23rd June. However, it is not clear how many gates will be opened on the first day.
At 4 pm today, the water level in Hirakud Das was recorded at 612 feet.
While 1,32,074 cubic feet of flood water is entering the reservoir every second, 39,791 cubic feet are discharged through the power channel and canal system.
