The theatrical run of Haiwaan, starring powerhouse actors Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, has officially come to a disappointing close.
Opening to a modest Rs 2.50 crore on Day 1, the film managed to collect Rs 6.75 crore over its first weekend, pushing its first-week total to Rs 8.75 crore. With subsequent collections crawling up by a mere Rs 25 lakh, the film wrapped up its domestic run at around Rs 9 crore nett, marking a shockingly low figure for an A-list starrer.
The movie struggled on multiple fronts, heavily impacted by average word-of-mouth, low pre-release promotions, and limited genre appeal.
Furthermore, it faced backlash and viewer disinterest due to being a Hindi remake of Mohanlal’s acclaimed Malayalam hit Oppam.
Disheartened by the project’s box office failure, director Priyadarshan has reportedly expressed reluctance to experiment with non-comedy genres featuring Akshay Kumar moving forward, noting that audiences primarily associate them with slapstick and lighthearted entertainers.
All eyes are now on the film’s upcoming digital streaming release, while Akshay Kumar moves on to an upcoming family comedy-drama directed by Anees Bazmee, co-starring Vidya Balan and Raashi Khanna.
