Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union Minister Debendra Pradhan passed away on Monday morning in New Delhi at the age of 84 due to age-related ailments. His mortal remains were brought to Bhubaneswar later in the evening, where they were received with a guard of honour by the state police at Biju Patnaik International Airport.
As his mortal remains arrived in Bhubaneswar, a large gathering of party workers, political leaders, and admirers paid their respects at the airport.
Mortal remains of the veteran leader were brought to the BJP state office in Bhubaneswar on Monday in a sombre procession, marking a significant moment of mourning for the party and the state of Odisha.
His body will be taken to his residence in Bhubaneswar, allowing the public to pay their last respects before the final rites are conducted.
Debendra Pradhan, a prominent figure in Odisha politics, served as a minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, holding portfolios such as Surface Transport and Agriculture between 1998 and 2001. He was also a three-time president of the BJP in Odisha, playing a pivotal role in laying the foundation for the party’s growth in the state. His contributions to public service and the development of Odisha were widely acknowledged by political leaders across party lines.
The news of his passing has drawn heartfelt condolences from national and state leaders. President Droupadi Murmu expressed her sorrow, stating, “Saddened by the demise of Shri Debendra Pradhan, former Union Minister and senior political leader. My heartfelt condolences to his son and Union Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, other family members, and admirers.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other prominent figures also mourned the loss of the veteran leader, recognizing his organizational skills, administrative prowess, and amiable personality.
Debendra Pradhan is survived by his son, Dharmendra Pradhan, who currently serves as the Union Minister of Education.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi described Pradhan as “a popular leader and skilled parliamentarian” who significantly contributed to Odisha’s development. Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik also paid tribute, recalling Pradhan’s “unparalleled organisational skills and amiable personality,” particularly during his ministerial tenure.
The state BJP president Manmohan Samal and leaders from various political parties expressed their grief, noting that Odisha has lost an influential political figure and a dedicated public servant. Tributes continue to pour in, reflecting Pradhan’s enduring impact on Odisha’s political landscape and his role in shaping the BJP’s presence in the state.
The passing of Debendra Pradhan marks the end of an era in Odisha politics, but his legacy is expected to inspire future generations of leaders in the region.
Arrangements are being made for his final journey, with state honours planned to honour his contributions to the nation and the state of Odisha.
