Pakistan Denies Kabul Hospital Strike as Taliban Claims 400 Dead in Escalating Conflict

A major escalation in tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan has emerged after the Taliban administration alleged that a Pakistani airstrike hit a drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul, killing at least 400 people and injuring 250 others.

The Taliban said the strike targeted the state-run Omid hospital on Monday night, describing it as a large rehabilitation facility treating individuals with substance dependence. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to recover bodies and assist survivors amid extensive damage to the building.

Pakistan Rejects Allegations

Pakistan has strongly denied targeting any civilian infrastructure. In an official statement, authorities said the military conducted “precise strikes” on militant infrastructure, including technical and ammunition storage facilities allegedly used by insurgent groups.

Officials maintained that no civilian locations, including hospitals, were targeted, calling the Taliban’s claims “misleading” and accusing Kabul of misrepresenting facts.

Casualty Figures Unverified

While Taliban officials reported high casualties, independent verification of the figures has not yet been possible. Eyewitness accounts described widespread destruction, with parts of the hospital reduced to debris and fires engulfing sections of the structure.

Emergency responders at the scene reported that bodies were still being recovered from the rubble hours after the strike.

Regional Tensions Intensify

The latest incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the neighbouring countries, which share a 2,600-kilometre border. The situation has deteriorated over the past month, with both sides accusing each other of supporting militant activity.

Pakistan has repeatedly alleged that Afghan territory is being used as a base for cross-border attacks, while Afghan authorities have rejected these claims and accused Pakistan of violating its sovereignty.

International Concern and Calls for Restraint

The United Nations has expressed concern over the rising violence. Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, urged both sides to exercise restraint and adhere to international law, particularly the protection of civilians and critical infrastructure.

Meanwhile, China has reiterated its willingness to mediate and called on both nations to avoid further escalation and return to dialogue.

Wider Geopolitical Context

The conflict unfolds against the backdrop of broader regional instability linked to tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which have heightened security concerns across West and South Asia.
