Puincha village in Banki, Cuttack, was struck by a series of daring thefts late last night during the traditional Jagara Jatra festival.

Miscreants looted five houses, decamping with gold jewellery and cash worth several lakhs of rupees.

According to local sources, the thefts occurred between 12:30 to 1 am while villagers were gathered at a temple courtyard, engrossed in a drama performance. The thieves took advantage of the festivities, breaking open several locks and cutting through iron latches to gain entry to the houses.

The Baideshwar police, who arrived at the scene soon after the incident was reported, have launched an investigation. However, no traces of the culprits have been found as of the latest reports.

This incident follows a disturbing trend of similar thefts in Odisha, with another major theft reported less than ten days ago in Khordha, where miscreants looted a house and set it on fire.
