Police arrest a fugitive murder accused in Bhawanipatna after six years of evasion, bringing closure to a long-pending case.
The accused, Bachu Majhi, allegedly killed Purna Majhi in May 2019 during a journey to Khurusmuhin village in Rayagada district. Purna, along with companions, travelled to witness the Tukimara festival. On the way, Bahcu attacked Purna with a sharp weapon and killed him.
After the crime, Bachu fled and avoided arrest for six years. The victim’s family repeatedly informed police about his presence near Gadaraguda village, but authorities failed to capture him. During this period, Bachu reportedly threatened villagers who supported the victim’s family, creating fear in the community.
On Sunday, police received a tip-off about Bachu’s location in Similibhata village under Bijepur Panchayat. Bijepur police station officer Neelambar Jani led a team with SI Shyam Kulasika and other personnel. They moved quickly and arrested Bachu around 1:30 p.m. The team brought him to the station and filed charges under IPC Section 302.
Police produced Bachu in court the same day. The court denied bail and sent him to judicial custody. The arrest ended years of frustration for the victim’s family, who had demanded justice since 2019.
The case highlights the persistence of law enforcement in tracking fugitives and the importance of community vigilance. Authorities now prepare to proceed with the trial, ensuring accountability for the crime.
