Mother’s Day is a universally cherished occasion that honours the selflessness, love, and sacrifices of mothers.

While the essence of the celebration remains the same, the way it is observed varies across different countries and cultures, creating a diverse tapestry of traditions that highlight the significance of motherhood.

The History of Mother’s Day

The origins of Mother’s Day can be traced back to various ancient cultures, where mothers and maternal figures were revered through ceremonies and festivals. However, the modern-day Mother’s Day that many celebrate finds its roots in the early 20th century. In the United States, Anna Jarvis championed the idea of a dedicated day to appreciate mothers, officially establishing the tradition in 1908. Over time, the celebration spread worldwide, with many nations adopting their own customs and choosing different dates to commemorate mothers.

Traditions Across the Globe

In the United States, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, often marked by heartfelt cards, flowers, and family gatherings. Similarly, countries like Canada, Australia, and India observe it on the same day, honouring mothers with gifts and affection.

Thailand, however, celebrates Mother’s Day on August 12th, which coincides with the birthday of Queen Sirikit, the nation’s mother figure. The day is celebrated with ceremonies, parades, and the gifting of jasmine flowers, symbolising purity and maternal love.

Mexico’s Mother’s Day is observed on May 10th, irrespective of the day of the week. Families come together to serenade their mothers with traditional songs and indulge in festive meals. In the United Kingdom, Mothering Sunday—an earlier version of Mother’s Day—falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, where children express gratitude by visiting churches and presenting their mothers with simnel cake.

Some Eastern European countries, including Russia and Serbia, intertwine Mother’s Day with International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8th. In the Middle East, Mother’s Day often aligns with the first day of spring, symbolising renewal and nurturing love.

The Evolution of Mother’s Day

Despite its widespread adoption, Mother’s Day has evolved over the years, influenced by commercial aspects and cultural shifts. While many argue that the celebration has become increasingly commercialised, with an emphasis on gifts rather than genuine appreciation, the core sentiment remains unchanged: recognising and cherishing the invaluable contributions of mothers.

Conclusion

Regardless of date or customs, Mother’s Day is a reminder of the profound impact of maternal love. It is a moment to reflect on the sacrifices, wisdom, and unwavering support that mothers provide. Whether through heartfelt messages, meaningful gifts, or simple acts of gratitude, the celebration underscores the universal truth that mothers deserve appreciation every day.
