Freight Train Derails in Odisha’s Koraput District, Rail Services Disrupted

A freight train derailed near Dumuriput in Odisha’s Koraput district late on Monday night, disrupting rail services on the Jagdalpur–Visakhapatnam route and once again highlighting concerns over recurring derailment incidents in the state.

The goods train was travelling from Jagdalpur to Visakhapatnam when at least two wagons went off the tracks, according to preliminary information. Railway officials said the exact cause of the derailment is yet to be determined and an inquiry has been initiated.

Restoration Work Launched on War Footing

Following the incident, the Railways immediately launched restoration operations. Accident Relief and Restoration Teams (ART) were deployed to rerail the affected wagons and repair the damaged track.

A specialised team is currently carrying out maintenance and safety checks at the site. Senior railway officials, including personnel from the engineering, electrical, track maintenance, and station management departments, rushed to the location to supervise the restoration work.

Due to the derailment, the Jagdalpur–Visakhapatnam Night Express has been diverted via Koraput, officials confirmed.

Earlier Derailments Raise Safety Concerns

This is not an isolated incident. In a similar case earlier, a goods train derailed on the fourth line at Rupsa railway station in Balasore district while heading towards Kharagpur. That incident also led to temporary rail traffic disruption, with heavy machinery deployed to restore normal operations.

Rail traffic was affected in both cases; however, no injuries were reported, railway authorities said.

Officials added that safety assessments are being carried out to prevent further disruptions and ensure the smooth movement of trains once services are fully restored.
