Odisha has every reason to celebrate on this Republic Day eve as four of its accomplished personalities have been conferred the prestigious Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, in the 2026 awards announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The four awardees from Odisha are:
- Charan Hembram (Literature and Education)
- Mahendra Kumar Mishra (Literature and Education)
- Sarat Kumar Patra (Art)
- Simanchal Patro (Art)
Their selection underscores Odisha’s deep contributions to India’s literary heritage, educational advancement, and vibrant artistic traditions, particularly in folk and traditional forms that have long been the soul of Odia culture.
The Padma Awards 2026 list includes 131 recipients across Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri categories.
Odisha’s four Padma Shri honourees represent the state’s continued recognition on the national stage for preserving and promoting its unique cultural identity, tribal literature, folklore, and traditional arts.
