Shaktikanta Das, the former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, has been appointed as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on February 22, 2025.
Das, a 1980-batch IAS officer from Tamil Nadu cadre, has held several key roles, including Union Economic Affairs Secretary and Revenue Secretary. His extensive experience in economic policy will be invaluable in his new position.
He took up this role following his retirement as RBI Governor in December 2024, after a six-year tenure during which he managed significant economic challenges, including the COVID pandemic and fluctuations in foreign exchange reserves.
Das has been ranked as the top central banker globally by the Global Finance Magazine. He has been recognized for navigating the RBI through significant challenges like the pandemic and digitization.
