Odisha mourns the loss of Devendra Sharma, the former Congress MLA from Aul constituency, who passed away today at the age of 66.
According to reports, Sharma was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar for kidney and heart-related complications. However, he passed away today after suffering cardiac arrest.
As per sources, the mortal remains of the later leader will be brought to his residence at Niali in Kendrapara district where people will pay their last respects before his final rites.
Sharma, a stalwart of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), left behind a legacy of public service and grassroots leadership.
Born on March 18, 1959, in Cuttack, Sharma hailed from a politically influential family. His father, Dr. Dibakar Sharma, was a revered physician and MLA, whose path Devendra followed with distinction. Elected as the 15th MLA from Aul in 2014, he was a vocal member of the opposition in the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
Known for his commitment to education and sports, Sharma headed the Kendrapara District Congress Association and served as president of the district cricket association, nurturing talents like footballer Sasmita Malik.
Sharma’s dedication to his constituents was evident in 2024 when he sold ancestral land in Niala village to fund his daughter Debasmita Sharma’s election campaign for the Aul seat, a testament to his belief in clean politics over money and muscle power.
