In a landmark move, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has initiated its first-ever procurement of finger millet (Ragi) from Odisha, targeting 40,000 metric tons for the central pool to bolster various Public Distribution System (PDS) schemes.
In the initial phase, 2,642 metric tons have been lifted from the tribal-dominated districts of Koraput and Nabarangpur, with Andhra Pradesh committing to receive 16,800 metric tons. The remaining quantity will be procured in phases from districts like Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur, in collaboration with the Departments of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment, Tribal Development Co-operative Corporation of Odisha Ltd, and Food Supply & Consumer Welfare.
Odisha’s 2024-25 Kharif season saw an impressive procurement of 75,000 metric tons of Ragi from over 64,000 farmers, reflecting the state’s growing prominence in millet production. This aligns with the Government of India’s declaration of 2023 as the International Year of Millet, aimed at promoting the production, consumption, and value addition of millets.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has championed Ragi as a superfood, emphasising its nutritional benefits and global recognition. Odisha’s “Shree Anna Abhiyan” further supports this vision by promoting the cultivation of high-quality, nutritious millets, empowering farmers and enhancing food security.
This initiative not only highlights Ragi’s high nutritional value but also underscores Odisha’s pivotal role in India’s millet mission. By integrating tribal farmers into the national supply chain, the state is paving the way for sustainable agriculture and economic growth in its tribal regions.
