A farmer from Paikpada village in Komna block of Nuapada district lost two of his bullocks to a lightning strike during a thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall today.
The farmer, Krushna Chandra Nayak, narrowly escaped death as the lightning struck close to him while he was working in the field.
Upon receiving the news, local veterinary officials rushed to the spot and conducted a post-mortem of the deceased animals before handing them over to the owner. The sudden loss has left the farmer devastated, as the bullocks were essential to his agricultural livelihood.
Locals have rallied behind Nayak, demanding immediate government compensation for the loss. The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of farmers and livestock during extreme weather events, and the urgent need for protective measures and insurance coverage.
