What began as a proud moment for Sujit Kumar Nayak — parking his brand-new Tata Sierra right in front of his house in Shastrinagar — quickly turned into a nightmare when a stranger took advantage of his absence to deliberately vandalise the vehicle.
The 52-year-old accused, Rajanikanta Mohanty, was arrested today by Kharavelnagar Police after a swift investigation and produced before court. Police said Mohanty not only damaged the car but, when confronted, brazenly claimed to be an Additional Superintendent of Police, hurled obscene abuses, pushed the complainant, and issued a direct threat to “kill him in a fake police encounter.”
The case dates back to May 12, 2026. After reviewing CCTV footage installed near the spot (in front of Plot No. 364, Shastrinagar), the complainant identified Mohanty as the culprit. When questioned, Mohanty tried to intimidate him by flashing a fake police identity and claiming senior rank in the force.
Further verification from the office of the Director General of Police, Odisha, confirmed that Rajanikanta Mohanty has never been employed in the police department in any capacity. He had been misleading people by impersonating a police officer.
During the investigation, CCTV footage clearly captured Mohanty damaging the parked Tata Sierra. Acting on reliable information, police apprehended him. From his possession, officers seized one Aadhaar card and one suspected fake police identity card.
When questioned about his permanent address, Mohanty failed to provide satisfactory proof. Both the address mentioned in his Aadhaar card and his present residence in Shastrinagar turned out to be rented accommodations.
The case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for mischief, hurt, criminal intimidation and other offences. Additional sections were later added. Further investigation is continuing.
Kharavelnagar Police have once again demonstrated that impersonators who misuse the police uniform to harass citizens will be dealt with strictly.
