Former prime minister Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92 in Delhi on Thursday.
According to reports, Singh was admitted to AIIMS Delhi this evening after his health deteriorated and he was taken to the hospital’s emergency department.
“With profound grief, we inform the demise of Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26th December 2024. Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.”, AIIMS Delhi said in am press note.
Dr. Manmohan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, after the Congress Party won the 2004 elections. He was re-elected for a second term in 2009. As Prime Minister, he was known for his calm and measured demeanour, as well as his commitment to economic development and global diplomacy.
Before becoming Prime Minister, he held the position of Union Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996. Prior to that, he served as an Economic Advisor in the Commerce Ministry, Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance, Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and Chairman of the University Grants Commission.
He is credited with initiating significant liberalization measures that included opening up the economy, encouraging foreign investment, and transforming India’s financial landscape.
