England opened their Super 8 campaign in style, defeating Sri Lanka by 51 runs in the T20 World Cup clash at Pallekele.

A disciplined bowling performance, led by Will Jacks and Jofra Archer, ensured England became the first team to secure points in Group 2.

England posted a modest 146/9 after opting to bat first. Phil Salt anchored the innings with a fluent 62 off 40 balls, while Jacks chipped in with a quick 21. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, England managed to set a competitive target.

Sri Lanka’s chase faltered early as Archer struck twice in the Powerplay. The middle overs were dominated by Adil Rashid and Liam Dawson, who tightened the screws with economical spells. Jacks returned with the ball to claim 3/22, dismantling Sri Lanka’s lower order. Skipper Dasun Shanaka’s 30 was the lone resistance as Sri Lanka folded well short of the target.

Jacks was named Player of the Match for his all-round brilliance. England captain Harry Brook praised Salt’s innings and the bowlers’ discipline, expressing confidence that Jos Buttler will soon find form. Sri Lanka’s Shanaka admitted disappointment with the batting collapse but remained hopeful of a turnaround in the upcoming fixtures.
