England have announced their playing XI for the fourth Test of the series against India, making just one forced change from the side that played at Lord’s.
Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir has been ruled out due to a fractured index finger on his left hand, sustained while fielding during the third Test. He has undergone surgery and will miss the remainder of the series.
Bashir’s injury has opened the door for a stunning return for Liam Dawson, the 35-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner, who last played Test cricket in July 2017. Dawson’s consistent performances in county cricket have earned him a comeback after nearly seven years.
Despite repeated failures, Zak Crawley retains his spot amidst growing criticism. England have kept faith in their pace trio of Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, and Jofra Archer, with Jamie Smith continuing as wicketkeeper.
The hosts lead the five-match series 2-1 and will be eyeing a series-clinching victory at Old Trafford.
On the other hand, Team India are battling an injury crisis. Nitish Kumar Reddy is out of the series, and Arshdeep Singh is unavailable for the Manchester Test. Pacer Akash Deep, still recovering from a groin strain, did not clear the latest fitness test. Anshul Kamboj, a new addition to the squad, could be in line for a debut.
England XI for 4th Test:
Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (vc), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Liam Dawson, Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer.
