Elina Svitolina defeated world No. 2 Iga Swiatek 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in a thrilling quarterfinal at Indian Wells, advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2019.
Svitolina capitalised on Swiatek’s inconsistent serving, which included eight double faults. She broke Swiatek’s serve at 5-4 in the deciding set and sealed victory with an ace followed by a forehand volley.
The Ukrainian star has enjoyed a strong season, winning the Auckland title and finishing runner-up in Dubai. She now prepares to face either Elena Rybakina or Jessica Pegula for a place in the final.
For Swiatek, the loss marked another quarterfinal exit this year, following similar results at the Australian Open and Qatar Open. Despite her six Grand Slam titles, she has struggled to maintain consistency in 2026.
Svitolina’s victory signals her resurgence on the WTA Tour, while Swiatek faces questions about her form heading into the rest of the season.
