In a disturbing development in the Durgapur gang-rape case, West Bengal Police have arrested a sixth suspect—a classmate of the 23-year-old medical student survivor.
The arrest follows the survivor’s statement before a magistrate, alleging that her classmate “tried to force himself on her” the night of the attack.
The survivor, a second-year student from Jaleswar, Odisha, was allegedly gang-raped near her medical college after going out for dinner with a friend. She recounted being chased into a forest, assaulted, and threatened by a group of men who forced her to call her friend and warned her against screaming.
CCTV footage from the college is being used to verify the timeline of events. Police have recreated the crime scene near Paranaganj Kali Bari cremation ground with all five previously arrested individuals and the survivor’s friend. The reconstruction was videographed for forensic and testimonial cross-verification.
Among the accused are a former college security guard, a hospital worker, a civic employee, and an unemployed man. Their mobile phones are undergoing forensic analysis, and classmates of the survivor are being questioned.
