A shocking incident unfolded on the bustling streets of Talcher during the Ganesha Puja celebrations, as a white car bearing registration number OD 16H-2927 tore through the bypass road from Talcher’s main chowk towards Handidhua, leaving a trail of destruction.
The vehicle, driven recklessly, struck approximately eight pedestrians in a series of collisions before attempting to flee the scene. The chaos erupted amidst the festive fervour, with the town packed with devotees and vibrant processions.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as pandemonium, with the car hitting multiple individuals at high speed. Local residents quickly mobilised, rescuing the injured and rushing them to medical facilities. Some victims were admitted to the Mandapal Hospital in Talcher, while others were transferred to Satra Hospital and other nearby medical centres for urgent care. Several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
Talcher police pursued the fleeing vehicle, apprehending the driver near Godibandha. The car has been seized and taken to the Talcher Town police station for further investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The police are conducting a thorough probe to determine the exact cause, including possible intoxication or mechanical failure.
