An intoxicated man reportedly murdered his elderly parents in Dhanapal village under Baisinga police jurisdiction in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.
The accused, identified as auto-rickshaw driver Himanshu Sahu, allegedly attacked his 85-year-old father, Hadibandhu Sahu and 78-year-old mother, Shantilata Sahu, with a hammer after a suspected episode of rage while under the influence of alcohol.
Reports indicate the accused had been living alone with his parents, while his wife and children resided separately due to ongoing familial disputes. On the morning of July 16, shocked villagers discovered the mother’s bloodied body lying near the house. Himanshu was seen calmly seated on a cot nearby, arousing suspicion.
Local residents alerted the police, who arrived promptly and detained Himanshu. Preliminary investigations suggest the attack was unprovoked and vicious, leaving the community reeling with disbelief.
The police have recovered the bodies for post-mortem and initiated a formal inquiry into the gruesome double homicide, which has shaken the peaceful village.
The incident raises urgent concerns around mental health, alcohol abuse, and elder safety in rural Odisha, especially as family structures evolve and societal pressures intensify.
