The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mangalore Regional Unit, intercepted an Indian national carrying 5.753 kg of suspected Methamphetamine—commonly known as Crystal Meth or Ice—aboard a train bound from Delhi to Bengaluru.
Acting on targeted intelligence, DRI officers conducted an operational check during the journey between Oct 8 and Oct 9. A search of the suspect’s trolley bag led to the recovery of three concealed packages containing the white crystalline psychotropic substance.
The contraband was seized under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The accused was subsequently arrested and remanded to judicial custody following an appearance before the competent NDPS Court.
Methamphetamine is a highly potent synthetic psychostimulant that severely impacts the central nervous system, carrying high risks of dependency and severe health damage. In India, unauthorised transit, possession, or sale of the substance is heavily penalised.
The commercial threshold for methamphetamine is set at 50 grams under Indian law; the seized quantity of nearly 5.75 kg exceeds this limit by more than 110 times. Offences involving commercial quantities carry stringent statutory penalties, including rigorous imprisonment ranging from 10 to 20 years alongside monetary fines.
