Actor Dhanush and filmmaker Vetrimaaran have announced their next collaboration, Thamizh Murugan, days after controversy erupted over Jr NTR and Trivikram Srinivas’ upcoming film based on Lord Murugan.
The announcement has reignited discussions on social media, with many comparing the two projects and debating their timing and subject matter.
Thamizh Murugan officially announced
Fans expecting an update on Vada Chennai 2 were instead greeted with the announcement of Thamizh Murugan.
Sharing the first glimpse, Dhanush described the film as:
“The Eternal Protector, warrior, THE KING & LEADER of the Thamizh people and lands.”
The nearly two-minute teaser features a grand battlefield sequence with Lord Murugan riding an elephant, highlighting the film’s historical and cultural setting.
According to the makers, Thamizh Murugan is adapted from writer Arivumathi’s historical novel of the same name, which explores Lord Murugan’s place in Tamil history, Sangam literature and the region’s cultural traditions.
Jr NTR-Trivikram film sparked controversy
The announcement comes amid criticism surrounding the upcoming Jr NTR-Trivikram Srinivas project, reportedly titled God of War.
The controversy began after producer Naga Vamsi described Lord Murugan in the announcement as:
“Born in the North. Forged in the Heartland. Worshipped in the South.”
The wording drew criticism from sections of Tamil audiences, who objected to the claim that the deity was “born in the North.”
Several political and cultural voices in Tamil Nadu also criticised the description. Tamil politician Seeman called for changes to the film’s portrayal of Lord Murugan and warned of protests if it distorted Tamil cultural history.
Social media compares the two films
The announcement of Thamizh Murugan quickly became a talking point online, with users debating whether the project had long been in development or was announced in response to the Jr NTR film.
Some Reddit users questioned the timing of the announcement, while others pointed out that Vetrimaaran had previously spoken about adapting Arivumathi’s book, suggesting the project had been planned well before the recent controversy.
Several fans also argued that Thamizh Murugan is expected to focus more on Tamil history, literature and cultural identity rather than being a conventional mythological film.
While comparisons between the two projects continue online, neither the makers of Thamizh Murugan nor the team behind the Jr NTR-Trivikram film have commented on the debate.
