The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the depression over north interior Odisha and adjoining south Jharkhand has moved northwestwards and is now centred over south Jharkhand and adjoining north interior Odisha.
According to the IMD’s 5:30 am IST bulletin on July 6, 2026, the weather system is expected to continue moving northwest over the next 24 hours, bringing widespread rainfall and the possibility of heavy to very heavy showers across parts of Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.
Current Position of the Depression
At 5:30 am IST, the depression was located near:
- Latitude: 22.4°N
- Longitude: 85.7°E
The system was positioned:
- Near the southwest of Chaibasa in Jharkhand
- Around 70 km southwest of Jamshedpur
- About 110 km south-southeast of Ranchi
- Nearly 170 km east-southeast of Jashpurnagar in Chhattisgarh
The depression has been moving northwestwards at a speed of approximately 8 km/h over the past six hours.
Movement Expected Over the Next 24 Hours
The IMD said the depression is very likely to continue moving nearly northwestwards across:
- Jharkhand
- Adjoining northern Odisha
- Northern Chhattisgarh
The weather system is expected to remain active during the next 24 hours, maintaining favourable conditions for widespread rainfall.
Rainfall Likely Across Several Regions
Under the influence of the depression, many districts in Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with isolated locations likely to receive very heavy rain.
