Due to the heavy rains across the state triggered by a depression over the Bay of Bengal off the Andhra Pradesh coast, the Odisha government has assured farmers of compensation for paddy loss.
Minister of State for Cooperation, Pradeep Bal Samanta today stated that the state will compensate farmers if the paddy crops were affected by the depression-induced rain.
“Arrangements have been made for covering the crops at mandis. Therefore, the possibility of paddy getting wet at mandis is minimal., the crops may sprout due to the rain,” he said further assuring the farmers that paddy will be procured at mandis after drying up when the rain subsides.
The recent unseasonal rains in Odisha have caused significant damage to paddy crops, particularly in the coastal and southern regions. The heavy downpour, triggered by a depression, has left many fields waterlogged, making it difficult for farmers to harvest their crops.
The continuous rain has hindered the harvesting process, with many farmers unable to use harvester machines due to the muddy conditions.
Standing crops ready for harvest have been severely affected, with reports of crops getting soaked and deteriorating in quality.
Farmers are facing significant economic losses as the rain has damaged both harvested and unharvested paddy.
The Odisha government has assured farmers of compensation for the crop loss. The state will assess the damage and provide financial assistance to affected farmers.
As part of preventive measures, farmers were advised to shift harvested paddy to safe places and cover them adequately to minimize losses.
The situation remains challenging for farmers, and the government is working to mitigate the impact and support those affected.
