Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly slapped by a man during a Jan Sunwai (public hearing) at her residence on Wednesday.
The attacker, identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, a 41-year-old resident of Rajkot, approached the CM under the guise of submitting documents before launching the assault.
Eyewitnesses reported that the man began shouting moments before striking Gupta, prompting immediate intervention by security personnel. The accused was detained on the spot and is currently being interrogated at the Civil Lines police station to determine his motives.
Political reactions poured in swiftly. BJP leaders described the incident as a politically motivated act, while Delhi Congress and AAP condemned the attack, raising concerns about public safety and the vulnerability of women in leadership.
Despite the shock, Gupta is reported to be stable and resolute in continuing her public outreach. Delhi Police have launched a full inquiry, and further details are expected following the interrogation.
