Tensions flared at Debagada College on Saturday, prompting authorities to declare an indefinite shutdown (Sine Die) to prevent potential law and order disruptions.
The college administration issued an official notice instructing all students and boarders to vacate the campus premises before 8 AM on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
The unrest stems from disagreements surrounding the filing and scrutiny of nomination papers for the upcoming Student Union Elections. According to sources, notification was released for a total of 20 posts in the college union. On Friday, 11 candidates submitted their nomination papers for seven of these positions.
However, during the scrutiny process, the nomination papers of six candidates were rejected due to technical discrepancies, leaving only five candidates in the fray. Among these, two candidates were vying for the post of President, while single candidates remained for the other positions.
The drama intensified on Saturday—the final day for withdrawal of candidatures—when Nitesh Sahu, one of the presidential contenders, withdrew his nomination. This left Shibun Dehuri as the sole candidate, effectively paving the way for his uncontested victory as the College Union President.
The rejection of multiple nominations caused widespread dissatisfaction among a large section of students, leading to agitation and fears of violence on the campus. Reacting swiftly to preserve peace and security, the College Principal issued a formal notice (No. 200/DC, dated 10/10/2026) declaring Sine Die until further orders.
Copies of the notice have been forwarded to the Director of Higher Education, R.D.E. Sambalpur, the Superintendent of Police, and the IIC of Model Police Station, Deogarh, to ensure smooth evacuation and security compliance.
The Principal stated that an official announcement regarding the election results and future course of action will be formally made on October 15.
