In a dramatic turn of events, world top-ten star Daniil Medvedev was defaulted from his China Open semifinal against Novak Djokovic on Monday after striking a spectator in the stands with a tennis ball hit in frustration.
The incident occurred late in the second set with Djokovic leading 7-5, 5-3. After losing a point, Medvedev struck a rebounding ball toward the stands. The ball flew into the front row and hit a spectator near the eye.
The fan received immediate medical attention and was escorted out of the stadium, prompting match officials to issue an automatic default under ATP safety and code of conduct rules.
”I feel terribly sorry for him actually, and I just hope he’s okay,” Medvedev stated following the match, expressing his desire to apologize to the fan in person.
Financial and Ranking Consequences
The default carries significant consequences for the Russian player beyond his exit from the tournament:
- Financial Penalty: Under ATP regulations, defaulted players forfeit prize money from the event. Medvedev forfeits his semifinal payout of approximately $220,000, making it one of the largest financial penalties for a default in ATP history.
- Forfeited Ranking Points: He also forfeits 200 ranking points earned during his run in Beijing.
- ATP Finals Impact: The loss of ranking points impacts his push to qualify for the year-end ATP Finals, as he holds a narrow lead over ninth-ranked Alex de Minaur.
Djokovic Expresses Empathy
Djokovic, who advanced to his seventh Beijing final, expressed sympathy for his opponent while acknowledging the severity of the incident. Djokovic experienced a similar disqualification at the 2020 US Open when a struck ball inadvertently hit a line judge.
Djokovic now moves on to face Alex de Minaur in the championship match on Tuesday.
