D Gukesh Stuns Magnus Carlsen at Norway Chess, Calls It a “Lucky Day” Despite Historic Win

Indian chess prodigy D Gukesh delivered a sensational upset at Norway Chess 2025, defeating former World Champion Magnus Carlsen in his own backyard on Sunday, May 1.

The victory is being hailed as one of the most remarkable wins in Gukesh’s young career, but the 17-year-old remained grounded, calling it “just a lucky day.”

Despite the massive achievement, Gukesh was modest in victory, saying:

“99 out of 100 times I would lose. Just a lucky day.”

He explained his game plan against the Norwegian legend:

“I was just trying to play moves that were tricky for him, and luckily, he got into a time scramble. One thing I’ve learnt from this tournament is that time scrambles can get too much out of control.”

While Gukesh stayed composed, Carlsen appeared visibly frustrated after the loss. Eyewitnesses reported the five-time world champion smashed the table and stormed off the playing area — an uncharacteristic display from the usually poised Norwegian grandmaster.

What This Win Means for Gukesh

  • Gukesh is the youngest Indian player to defeat Carlsen in a classical game.

  • The win adds significant momentum to his already impressive chess journey, especially after becoming the youngest-ever challenger for the World Chess Championship earlier this year.

  • His humility in victory has further earned him praise from the global chess community.

Held annually in Stavanger, Norway, this elite tournament attracts the world’s top grandmasters. Gukesh’s win has added fresh excitement to the event, proving once again that the next generation of chess talent is ready to take on legends.
