A cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and Odisha has triggered concerns across the state, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting the formation of a low-pressure system by September 2.
The system is expected to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall to southern Odisha, particularly affecting districts such as Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangapur, and Kalahandi. An orange alert has been issued for Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Koraput, warning residents of potential flooding and waterlogging.
Additional warnings have been extended to Rayagada, Gajapati, Balangir, Nuapada, and other districts, while northern regions including Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, and Khordha are advised to brace for thunderstorms and lightning.
Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors during peak rainfall hours and avoid low-lying areas. Disaster response teams are on standby, and local administrations have begun precautionary measures to mitigate damage.
The IMD continues to monitor the evolving system, with updates expected as the low-pressure area develops further.
