Odisha is set for a dry and cooler week even as two weather systems intensifying over the Bay of Bengal spark speculation about a potential winter cyclone. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has clarified that neither of the developing systems currently poses a direct threat to the state.
Twin Weather Systems Strengthen Over Bay of Bengal
Two evolving weather systems are being closely monitored by the IMD:
1. System Originating from the Malacca Strait
A weather disturbance that formed over the Malacca Strait has strengthened into a deep depression. Meteorologists report that it may intensify into a cyclonic circulation as it tracks west-northwest across the central Bay of Bengal.
Although the system continues to gain momentum, its potential landfall remains uncertain.
2. Circulation Near Sri Lanka
A second system has developed over the southwest Bay of Bengal, close to Sri Lanka and the adjoining Indian Ocean. This circulation is also intensifying and is expected to evolve into a well-marked low-pressure area and later a depression within the next 24 hours.
Current IMD model projections indicate that this system, too, is unlikely to move toward the Odisha coastline.
Odisha to Witness Dry Weather, Falling Night Temperatures
Despite heightened public concern about a possible cyclone, the IMD’s regional centre in Bhubaneswar forecasts dry weather across Odisha until December 2.
-
Skies may remain partly cloudy in some areas.
-
No rainfall warnings have been issued beyond November 26.
-
Night temperatures are expected to drop by 2°C to 3°C over the next two days, signaling the return of winter chill.
The only active advisory is a Yellow Warning for dense fog in parts of Koraput and Sundargarh until Wednesday morning. No further alerts are currently in place for the next six days.
