Cyclone Montha over the west-central Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm, according to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued on Tuesday morning.

The system is currently moving north-northwestwards at around 15 kmph and is expected to make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, by Tuesday evening or night as a severe cyclonic storm.

Current Position and Intensity

As of 5:30 a.m. today (October 28, 2025), Cyclone Montha was positioned approximately:

  • 190 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam

  • 270 km south-southeast of Kakinada

  • 340 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam

  • 550 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha)

The IMD has predicted sustained wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph during landfall. These strong winds may cause significant damage in coastal Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha districts.

Red Alert and Preparedness

A Red Alert has been issued for the south Odisha coast, urging residents to stay indoors and fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea.
The Odisha government has deployed disaster response teams and placed district administrations on high alert, particularly in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, and Koraput districts.

Authorities in both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have begun evacuation operations and are closely monitoring the storm’s trajectory to minimize risk and ensure public safety.

Expected Impact

Meteorologists have warned of:

  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall in coastal and southern Odisha districts.

  • Strong winds along the Andhra and Odisha coasts.

  • Possible storm surge and localized flooding in low-lying regions.

Citizens are advised to follow official updates from the IMD and State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMAs) for safety advisories and real-time information.

Safety Advisory

Residents in coastal areas are urged to:

  • Remain indoors during heavy wind or rain.

  • Avoid low-lying and flood-prone areas.

  • Keep emergency kits, food, and water ready.

  • Stay connected to official news and weather alerts.
