Cyclone Montha over the west-central Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm, according to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued on Tuesday morning.
The system is currently moving north-northwestwards at around 15 kmph and is expected to make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, by Tuesday evening or night as a severe cyclonic storm.

The IMD has predicted sustained wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph during landfall. These strong winds may cause significant damage in coastal Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha districts.

A Red Alert has been issued for the south Odisha coast, urging residents to stay indoors and fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea.
