The Cyber Police of Bhubaneswar have apprehended noted Malayalam telefilm producer and actor Prasad Balan, alias Kichu, for masterminding a sprawling inter-state cyber fraud.
According to officials, the actor lured victims into fake online investment schemes disguised as trading and “virtual gold bidding” platforms. Posing as a film industry figure, Kichu projected credibility and posted misleading advertisements for part-time jobs, ensnaring job seekers across India.
One such victim, identified as Deepak Nayak, reportedly lost over ₹54 lakh to the scam. Acting swiftly on the complaint, Odisha police coordinated with their Kerala counterparts to conduct a joint operation, leading to Kichu’s arrest in Kerala.
Seized items from his possession included bank documents, multiple PAN cards, passports, and digital devices. Investigations suggest he operated similar rackets in at least 10 states, funnelling funds into film and entertainment ventures.
Authorities emphasised the growing sophistication of cyber fraud and warned citizens to remain vigilant against enticing but suspicious job and investment offers online.
The case remains under active investigation, with police tracking down additional accomplices and victims.
