A woman home guard, identified as Manorama Panda, lost her life after being run over by a truck near the Urban Hat locality of Cuttack on Wednesday.
The tragic incident occurred while she was returning home from duty on her bicycle.
The deceased was deployed at the Malgodown Police Station and was reportedly on her way home when the fatal collision took place. Eye-witnesses claimed that the truck appeared to be speeding when it struck the home guard from behind, running over her and causing fatal injuries on the spot.
Following the incident, local residents gathered at the site, demanding swift action against the driver and calling for improved traffic regulation in the area. Authorities from the local police station arrived promptly and took custody of the body, which was later sent for post-mortem.
The event has triggered discussions about the safety of frontline personnel like home guards and the persistent issue of reckless driving on Cuttack’s busy streets. Calls for stricter enforcement and safer commuting provisions for women, especially those on duty, have gained renewed urgency following the tragedy.
