Current Climate Pledges Will Reduce Global Emissions by Just 6% by 2035, Warns UN Report

A landmark United Nations report released on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, has revealed that current national climate pledges will cut global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by a mere 6% below 2019 levels by 2035, leaving international climate targets substantially off track.

The ‘2026 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Synthesis Report’, published by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), evaluated 127 new NDCs representing 154 parties to the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Emissions Cuts Fall Short of Paris Agreement Goals

According to the findings, even if all current commitments—including conditional elements—are fully implemented, emissions are projected to drop by only 9% below 2019 levels over the next decade.

The alarming assessment arrives just days after a separate UN report concluded that the critical 1.5°C global temperature rise threshold is now effectively out of reach. Climate experts estimate that the best achievable outcome under current trajectories is restricting global warming to approximately 1.8°C before attempting to pull temperatures back down.

While most newly submitted NDCs align with long-term decarbonization targets aimed at achieving net-zero emissions between 2040 and 2070, their collective implementation projects a median end-of-century warming range of 1.7°C to 2.3°C.

”However, returning warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius would require substantial additional GHG emission reductions in the coming years,” the UNFCCC report stated.

Broader Economic Integration of Climate Action

On a positive note, the UNFCCC highlighted that the latest generation of NDCs reflects deeper institutional integration across economies. Climate planning is increasingly engaging local and regional authorities, civil society organizations, and the private sector.

However, the UN underscored that despite broader societal participation, far more aggressive emission slashing is urgently required to avert the worst impacts of global warming.
