The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially addressed the blockbuster trade that sent star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for ₹14 crore, marking one of the biggest player moves ahead of the IPL 2025 season.
The IPL governing council confirmed the trade on Saturday morning, ending weeks of speculation. Jadeja, who was retained for ₹18 crore last season, moved for a reduced amount as part of the finalised deal. The trade also saw Sam Curran move to Rajasthan, while CSK brought in Sanju Samson for ₹18 crore.
Jadeja, one of CSK’s most influential players since joining in 2012, played a crucial role in the team’s successes—including the unforgettable final of IPL 2023, where he smashed 10 runs off the last two balls to secure the trophy.
CSK on Why They Let Jadeja Go
Speaking after the announcement, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan described the decision as one of the toughest the franchise has ever taken.
“This decision has been taken by the team management, and it is a very tough decision—leaving out Jaddu, who has been responsible for CSK’s success over the years. But with the team going through a transition, this was necessary,” Viswanathan said in a video shared by CSK.
He added that CSK consulted Jadeja before confirming the trade and proceeded only after receiving his agreement.
“It is a must that we consult the players concerned, and it was after mutual agreement that we undertook this.”
“He Felt He Was at the Fag End of His Career”
During their discussion, Viswanathan said Jadeja expressed that he was approaching the later stages of his white-ball career and felt it might be the right moment to seek a fresh environment.
“Jadeja was very clear that if there was an opportunity for him, he would consider it, because he felt he is at the far end of his career in white-ball cricket,” he said.
Team Transition, Player Ages Factored In
The CSK CEO acknowledged fans’ emotional reactions but stressed the importance of long-term planning.
“We have certain players who are at the far end of their careers, and it is very important for CSK to rebuild over the next few years. In a mini-auction, you do not always get the best Indian batters. So, the think-tank felt a change was needed,” Viswanathan explained.
He assured supporters that CSK will continue to maintain its trademark consistency and competitiveness in upcoming seasons.
