In a major review of Odisha’s urban transport initiatives, Minister Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, Housing & Urban Development Department and Public Enterprises, assessed Capital Region Urban Transport’s (CRUT) operations on Thursday.
His visit to CRUT’s headquarters underscored the state’s commitment to improving infrastructure, expanding routes, and harnessing digital solutions for enhanced commuter experiences.
During the meeting, CRUT Managing Director Dr. N. Thirumala Naik provided updates on electric-depot developments in Naraj, Pokahriput, Chhend, Rourkela, Haldiapadar, Berhampur, and Sambalpur. He also highlighted the upcoming expansion of city bus services in Keonjhar, Baripada, Angul, and Jharsuguda under the first phase.
The Minister toured the Command Control Centre, where real-time bus tracking and grievance redressal mechanisms for Odisha Yatri and CRUT were demonstrated. He praised the integrated technology systems that improve service delivery while ensuring quick responses to commuter concerns.
Key Highlights of the Review Meeting
Digitalisation & Passenger Experience
Dr. Mahapatra stressed the importance of increasing digital transactions, setting a target of 50% adoption by year-end. Several forward-thinking initiatives were discussed, including:
- Expansion of Digital Pass systems to more cities
- Rollout of National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC) for seamless travel
- WhatsApp-based ticket booking to improve accessibility
- Deployment of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in buses for enhanced safety
- Introduction of three hydrogen fuel cell buses under an MoU with GRIDCO and NTPC
Ticketing & Crew Performance
To curb ticketless travel and revenue loss, the Minister urged CRUT to strengthen enforcement measures. Furthermore, he recommended Key Performance Indicator (KPI) incentives based on commuter feedback to motivate high-performing crew members.
Driver Training & Service Enhancement
A structured refresher training program will be introduced for CRUT’s Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) drivers, utilising four government training institutes. Additionally, behavioural training at Odisha Urban Academy will ensure that drivers provide professional and courteous passenger interactions.
At present, CRUT operates 560 Ama Buses (380 Diesel, 180 Electric) across 106 routes, serving lakhs of commuters daily. The Minister commended CRUT’s dedication to transforming public transport and reaffirmed the government’s vision for Vikshit Odisha—a smart, sustainable, and commuter-friendly transport system.
Senior officials, including General Managers Sanjay Biswal (O&M) and Sahadev Samadhia (P&A), were also present at the review meeting.
