A CRPF havildar allegedly died by suicide inside the Matkanjharan CRPF camp under Lathikata police limits in Rourkela on Monday morning.
The deceased has been identified as 56-year-old Subhash Prasad, a resident of Uttar Pradesh. Preliminary reports suggest he used his service weapon to take the extreme step inside the camp premises.
Though the exact reason remains unclear, sources indicated that personal or family-related issues may have triggered the act. Lathikata police reached the spot soon after receiving information and launched an investigation.
The CRPF camp, set up in October last year along the Odisha–Jharkhand border, was established to curb growing Maoist activities in the region. It was inaugurated by Western Range DIG Brijesh Rai in the presence of Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani.
At the time of its establishment, the camp authorities had also organised health camps for local residents and distributed textbooks among school children as part of community outreach initiatives.
Police are now probing the circumstances surrounding the incident to ascertain the exact cause.
