In a disturbing incident that has sparked outrage across Odisha, a young man and woman were mercilessly beaten with sticks in the middle of Giri Road here late at night, with the entire attack captured in a viral video that is now circulating widely on social media.

The victims, identified as Umesh Rath from the Bijipur area under Town Police Station limits and a young woman, were riding a motorcycle when they were intercepted and attacked.

According to police sources, the assault stemmed from prior enmity. Bystanders watched as the couple was dragged down and beaten mercilessly while lying on the ground amid passing vehicles and onlookers.

Berhampur SP D. Shravana Vivek M confirmed that teams from Town Police Station, Baidyanathpur Police Station, and Gosaninuagaon Police Station promptly reached the spot and launched an investigation. The injured duo was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment, where their statements have been recorded.

In a significant update, the Additional Director General of Police (ADG) stated that the attackers have been identified, and raids are underway at multiple locations to nab them. “The assailants have been identified, and police teams are conducting raids,” the ADG said, assuring swift action.

The viral video shows multiple assailants wielding sticks, with the couple vulnerable on the road as vehicles slow down and people gather. This incident adds to growing concerns over public safety and recurring violent attacks in the Berhampur region.

The police have appealed for public cooperation and are examining CCTV footage from the area to strengthen the case. Further details on the motive and the number of accused are expected soon as the investigation progresses.

This brazen roadside assault has left residents shocked, with many questioning the safety of public spaces, especially at night.
