Tension gripped Nuapada Sub‑Jail on Monday morning after a convicted prisoner escaped while performing routine cleaning work inside the jail premises.
The fugitive has been identified as Biswabhihari Majhi (30) of Kandulkona village under Sinapali police station. According to jail authorities, around 8 am, Majhi took advantage of the cleaning activity to slip out of the compound.
Majhi was serving a 20‑year sentence handed down by the Nuapada court in 2023 for a rape conviction dating back to 2021. Jail Superintendent Balaram Majhi confirmed the escape and said immediate alerts have been issued.
Police have launched a search and investigation drive to trace the convict. Questions are being raised over how the prisoner managed to flee despite security arrangements, with officials promising a detailed inquiry into lapses.
