Congress MP Manish Tewari on Sunday took aim at US President Donald Trump, urging that the American leader be “educated” on the historical origins of the Kashmir conflict, following Trump’s statement offering to mediate between India and Pakistan.
Trump had described the India-Pakistan dispute as a conflict that has persisted for a “thousand years,” while praising the two nations for agreeing to a US-brokered ceasefire after four days of intense hostilities.
Responding sharply on social media platform X, Tewari wrote:
“Someone in the US establishment needs to seriously educate their President Donald Trump that Kashmir is not a biblical 1000-year-old conflict. It started on October 22, 1947 — 78 years ago, when Pakistan invaded the Independent State of Jammu & Kashmir, which subsequently was ceded to India in ‘FULL’ by Maharaja Hari Singh on October 26, 1947. That includes areas illegally occupied by Pakistan till now. How difficult is it to grasp this simple fact?”
Tewari’s remarks highlight India’s longstanding stance that Kashmir is an internal matter, and reiterate the historical legal basis for its integration with the Union of India — a point frequently emphasized in diplomatic responses to international mediation offers.
