In the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati raised concerns during zero hour over the recent death of a Nepali student at KIIT University.
He demanded a judicial probe into the incident, emphasizing the historical ties between Nepal and Odisha. Bahinipati highlighted that Odisha has been “ashamed across the country because of KIIT” and mentioned the cultural connection, noting that Lord Jagannath’s Kasturi (musk) comes from Nepal.
The tragic death of the Nepali student has sparked widespread protests and discussions about institutional negligence and student safety. The university has taken disciplinary actions, suspending two hostel officials and terminating two security staff members. However, opposition leaders, including Bahinipati, are calling for a more thorough investigation to address the concerns of the student’s family and the broader community.
The incident has also strained diplomatic relations, with the Nepali Embassy intervening and expressing concerns over the treatment of Nepali students. The Odisha government is under pressure to ensure a transparent and fair investigation to uphold the state’s longstanding relationship with Nepal and to restore confidence in its educational institutions.
As the situation develops, the Assembly is expected to deliberate further on the matter, with calls for justice and improved safety measures for students gaining momentum.
