In a key organizational overhaul, the Congress party in Odisha has announced a new list of Vice Presidents and General Secretaries as part of its strategy to rebuild and strengthen its presence in the state.
The appointments reflect a careful balance of political experience, regional representation, and social inclusivity.
Prominent political veterans such as Taraprasad Bahinipati, Santosh Singh Saluja, Ramesh Jena, and Debasis Patnaik have been given key roles, underlining the party’s intent to leverage seasoned leadership in the revival process. Alongside them, newer names like Madhusmita Sethy and Subarna Nayak signal an effort to elevate fresh faces within the party’s state unit.
Odisha’s significant tribal population finds notable representation in the new leadership list. Leaders like Appal Swamy Kadraka, Mangu Khilla, Pabitra Saunta, and Nilamadhab Hikaka have been appointed, signaling the Congress’s outreach to tribal communities, which make up about 22% of the state’s population.
Minority communities have also been represented. Syed Yashir Nawaz brings in representation from the Muslim community, while C.S. Raazen Ekka represents Christians and the western Odisha region.
The list includes two women—Sasmita Behera and Madhusmita Sethy—indicating a modest but present effort to improve gender diversity within the leadership, although women still form a small fraction (2 out of 17) of the total appointments.
With the induction of 7 Vice Presidents and 10 General Secretaries, the Congress has signaled a push to revamp its grassroots structure. This organizational refresh comes at a time when the party is aiming to recover lost ground in the state and build momentum ahead of upcoming electoral challenges.
Party sources indicate that while the current list marks a significant reshaping of the state unit, more announcements are expected. Several notable omissions have been flagged, and further appointments may be made in the coming days to address those gaps.
