Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya has landed in legal controversy after a complaint was filed alleging disrespect toward the Indian national flag during celebrations following India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
The complaint was submitted at the Shivaji Nagar Police Station in Pune by advocate Wajid Khan. Authorities confirmed receiving the application seeking appropriate legal action.
Allegations Linked to Victory Celebrations in Ahmedabad
The issue relates to the post-match celebrations at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad after India national cricket team won the tournament.
According to the complaint, videos circulating on social media show Pandya celebrating with the Indian tricolour draped over his shoulders while dancing and running across the field.
The complainant further alleged that Pandya was seen lying on the stage with his girlfriend Mahieka Sharma during the celebration while the national flag remained draped over him, which he claims amounts to disrespect toward the flag.
Complainant Cites National Flag Code
Advocate Wajid Khan argued that the act violates provisions under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, which emphasizes maintaining the dignity of the national flag.
Khan said that although the incident occurred in Ahmedabad, the complaint was filed in Pune because the national flag represents the entire country.
Police officials acknowledged receiving the complaint but have not yet provided further details regarding any potential legal proceedings.
Mixed Reactions on Social Media
The controversy has sparked divided reactions online. Some fans defended Pandya, saying the celebrations were part of an emotional moment following a historic victory. Others argued that national symbols should be handled with greater care during public celebrations.
India Clinched Historic T20 World Cup Victory
The celebrations followed India’s dominant victory over New Zealand national cricket team in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
India won the match by 96 runs, securing its third T20 World Cup title and becoming the first team to achieve the milestone. The win also marked the first time India lifted the trophy on home soil.
